Self-Managing Your WebSite Workshops

Managing Your Own Website
Registration is at the bottom of this page. Please scroll down.
Perhaps you currently have a free blog and you need to upgrade. A free WordPress website does not allow you to sell products or promote yourself as a commercial entity.
Perhaps you already have a hosted WordPress-based site, but you’d like to manage it yourself rather than paying someone else and having to wait for them to get around to it.
Maybe you just want to save the maintenance costs. Maybe it’s as simple as wanting to be able to update your website whenever you want, or the excitement of developing your skills to the point of true web independence.
If you have a WordPress-based Website (or you’re planning on having one built for you) and you’d like to manage it yourself, this is the workshop that will embed the skills you need to take this important and money-saving step.
This workshop will give you WordPress autonomy and teach you a number of basic as well as more advanced skills on a WordPress-based website.

In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn how to:
• create and update pages and posts
• add pictures, video and audio files
• reposition text and pictures into different arrangements
• generate interactive discussions on site
• install PayPal
• create “ads” (from simple text to embedded videos) that stay visible on every page
• install a subscription service to notify clients/friends every time an update is made
• monitor which pages are being viewed the most, how people are finding the site, and more
• how to optimize your site for search engines by yourself
Please note these prerequisites:
Participants must bring a laptop with wireless capability. We have arranged for Trent University to supply participants with guest wireless access during the workshop, but computers will not be provided.
(Note: If you do not have an existing WordPress website, or websites are completely foreign to you, we will be offering a workshop just for you on March 19th in the same location: “Create Your First Website in One Day: WordPress for Beginners.”)
Instructors:
James Dewar and Sue Reynolds have been building WordPress websites since 2006 – everything from small sites with only a few pages to massive sites that manage client databases, multiple ongoing discussion forums and other sophisticated applications.
They believe in the “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime” philosophy when it comes to managing client websites – empower clients to manage their own content. Of course James and Sue will stay in the background like pleased parents ready to provide support if there are questions.

Date: Saturday, January 22nd, 2011
